Last weekend (Sep 5), my husband and I headed back to Vancouver to catch another concert. This time however we didn't also go to a furry convention. We did however stay in the same hotel that usually hosts VancouFur, but the lobby seemed a lot emptier without a bunch of furries running around...
Anyways, this time we were going to see Tame Impala live. I'm something a bit more than a casual fan of his. I like most of his stuff (not so much his first two albums but it's been a long time since I gave them a true listen) but I don't spin his albums very often. Still, I was very excited for the show, and my husband had no idea what to expect as he's never heard (or at least never recognized) his music.
We rented a car for the drive this time, since our car was a bit out of commission. It works, but was having trouble accellerating, which is a problem you don't want to deal with on a mountain highway... Since I'm writing this two weeks later, I can now say that the transmission flywheel assembly was faulty and is current being replaced. From the rental service, we reserved a small car but were instead given a giant Subaru Forester SUV. I hate large vehicles and frankly think there needs to be legistlation to limit how big they can be, but thankfully I didn't do any of the driving on this trip. The car was a brand new 2026 model with less than 2K kilometers on it, which was kind of neat to be in such a new vehicle. However the car was also extremely uncomfortable. The seats actively hurt to sit in, so the drive was kind of miserable.
Before the concert, we spent the day wondering through different parts of Vancouver. We visited a flea market, and several boutique book and record stores where we each scored some really good deals. My husband found copies of some of the book editions of the Order of the Stick webcomic, which he has been wanting to collect for a long time. I found a 2000 copy of the Beatles Anthology book for
I also found not just a few more records for my Beatles collection project, but ones I thought I'd never see in my life. John and Yoko's Two Virigins (NSFW warning for the cover art), and Wedding Album. Both highly experimental and barely listenable, but also exceedingly rare. I figured that if I ever came across one of John's experimental albums, they would be priced at hundreds of dollars. But, to my surprise, both of these were under $50 which I thought was very worth it. Wedding Album especially, since it comes in a big box with lots of cards, photos, and artworks. All around its a very cool artpiece. That still leaves one of his and Yoko's avant garde albums to find; Life With The Lions.
On top of those, I also found two more Ringo albums. Old Wave and Ringo The 4th. Old Wave is another I wondered if I'd never find. It was never originally released in the UK or US, which makes it much rarer than his other albums. It was however released in Canada, which made me confused as to why I haven't seen dozens of copies littering bargain bins. Regardless, I have a copy now which puts me just a bit closer to having them all!
Annyways, that evening was the concert, at Rogers Arena. I guess all I can say is that the show was amazing. The setlist was killer, and the lightshow was spectacular. This time, my phone wasn't nearly dead, so I was able to take several photos and videos. I really loved the portion of the set where Kevin played his recent techno bangers, Ethereal Connection and Not My World, from the smaller, secondary stage. I could tell the rest of the crowd wasn't as into them but I was thrilled he played those live.
Unfortunately, in our infinite wisdom, we decided to get Indian food before the show, which ended up giving my husband huge stomach pains and made him feel ill. He ended up going back to the hotel just a few minutes after the opening act. He told me to stay at the show, but we were both bummed he missed it. Maybe Kevin play in Vancouver again some day and then we won't eat the butter chicken that kills you beforehand.
